The One Thing We've Given Mullumbimby for Almost 100 Years: Confidence

Stewart's Menswear has been part of Mullumbimby since 1929. Three generations of the Stewart family ran the shop before Sue and I took over in 2004, and I've been behind the counter since 1979.

In that time, I've seen fashions come and go (and a few come back again). I've measured school boys for their school formal suits, and years later fitted their sons.

But if you asked me what we've really been giving Mullumbimby all these years, it wouldn't be shirts or shorts. It would be confidence.

It all comes down to confidence

Men walk through our door for all sorts of reasons. Some are 18 and getting ready for their first job. Some are 80 and want pants that fits the way pants used to. Some are heading to a wedding, a first date, a funeral, or a big night out, and they're not quite sure what to wear.

What most of them have in common is a little bit of uncertainty.

We're not a chain store. We live here, we've raised our family here, and we're involved in our town, from the Chamber of Commerce to sporting groups and the Mullumbimby Agricultural Society. Many of our customers have shopped with us for generations, and plenty have become friends.

That connection matters. When you know the people serving you, it's a lot easier to ask the questions you might feel silly asking anywhere else.

Recognised for hustle and heart

In 2026, we were honoured to win gold in the Hustle & Heart category at the Roar Awards. It meant a great deal to us, because it recognised the everyday work behind the counter rather than anything flashy.

That same care carries online. Since launching our online store in 2020, we've sent over 1,200 orders across Australia, and every one is packed with care by Sue or myself in Mullumbimby.

Confidence isn't just about clothes, of course.
